Today, some of the children and teachers from the Light of Hope Homes visited Gold Reef City to further their understanding and knowledge of gold mining in South Africa, as well as to enjoy a day of fun and excitement. The day started with a tour of one of the oldest gold mines in Johannesburg. At the surface, the children learnt all about the mine and how it operated in the days of the Egoli Gold Rush. Then, wearing hard hats and carrying their own headlamps, they went underground in an open lift into a mine shaft and along the tunnels where miners once worked. The little ones were fascinated by how dark and damp it was below and were really excited to experience the extreme mining conditions. After the underground trip, everyone regrouped to watch a live demonstration on how gold is extracted from solid rock in the refining process and how a bar of gold is made. And of course, all work and no play, is not how we like to do things, so after the tour was completed, the rest of the day was spent enjoying the many thrilling rollercoasters and other rides, enjoying pizza and ice cream and having fun exploring the park and all its entertainment. Some of the older children were even brave enough to try the 10/10-fear-factor-rated Tower of Terror ride! Witnessing the happiness and smiles after each ride was absolutely priceless. Much fun was had by all!
